Financial Fears

We all have fears. Sometimes fears can be so paralyzing that they stop us from living our lives to our fullest potential.

I watched my mom struggle working 2 jobs to put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. We had what we needed but not really much extra for vacations and lots of extracurricular activities. We didn’t have the nicest house, cars, getting clothes and sneakers that all the other kids were wearing didn’t happen either but that’s o.k.

I met my now husband in 8th grade.  He lived in a nice house and seemed to have more than we did. He had a pool and a big house and I would go over often and saw that side of things.

One of my BIG FEARS is around money. I have such an odd relationship with money. My husband and I both moved out of our homes and in together at age 19. We got full time jobs and went to college to make sure we were living up to our fullest potential. We had to get out of our environments so desperately for our emotional well being that we didn’t have time to save up for a nice house. We did that while living in our tiny 1 bedroom apartment.

At the age of 24, we bought our starter home together. We were so proud and we got some not so supportive comments from family on doing that so early in life while still trying to find our way in our careers. Well we did it anyway. We took our time furnishing and fixing the house and still need a few things to this day. We continued to struggle financially until about 5 years ago in 2010.

We had just had our baby girl #2 and this second baby was weighing on us financially. I decided to stay home with our 4 year old and new baby because putting them both in day care would’ve been silly. With the travel to and from work and daycare costs, my entire full time salary would have gone to travel and daycare.

As we began our online health and fitness coaching business as independent contractors with team beachbody, we started seeing success and making money. You would think the fears would go away. Well, they did not because we had just filed bankruptcy and were trying to get back on our feet again and the fear of losing everything again started setting in.

We began getting caught up on bills, paying off loans, having money in the savings, having money left over at the end of the week to do fun stuff,  and starting a vacation fund. In 2014, we took our girls to Disney World 4 times. My husband quit his job in 2013 and we were solely relying on our health and fitness business and our income doubles ever year and has consistently for the past 5 years. We closed on a new home worth 3x our current one in July 2015. We make WELL into the 6 figures and hired a financial advisor and great accountant who work with entrepreneurs to ensure we aren’t screwing things up and spending more than we are earning because that’s what got us in trouble before!

With all this security, I still have fears of losing it all, of not managing it right, of earning TOO MUCH. I know, weird right? But it is the reality. If we make more, will we be able to handle it or will I be able to handle it. I have never had money before and now that I do, I still have fears.

I want you to know, no matter where you are in life, be sure to deal with your fears. I journal and do personal development and have even started therapy around this to be sure I don’t SCREW UP.

Getting over these fears that stem from self limiting beliefs like “I am not worthy of having money”

There are a few ways we can conquer these fears.

  1. THERAPY ~ I highly recommend this. There is no shame in speaking to someone. If you don’t work thru this block, your success will never reach the heights you desire and deserve.
  2. Personal development ~ Reading some emotional books will be a great start to get things moving. Books that make you realize life is too short. ( The Universe Has your Back, Life’s Golden Ticket, and The Greatest Miracle of the World )
  3. Money workbooks ~ Dave Ramsey is the man when it comes to this topic. (Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace University)

Always be aware of your fears, deal with them, and be sure you face them and have a plan!

FEARS can come in all shapes and sizes and by not sharing would be a disservice.

For those who are drowning and can’t seem to get head above water and you have tried all of the above, there is no shame in getting outside help and our story is shared below.
